Ben (33) and wife Leona J. (28) are found on the 1920 census in Buncombe Co, NC, Roll T625_1286, ED 10, p. 7a, household #162, enumerated on 12 Jan. Children: Ivy L. (13), Nina J. (11), Ben G. By the way, the Soc Sec Administration should be able (if you request it) to provide a full work history of a deceased individual who had a Soc. Sec Number. This will assist you in knowing where they lived, when they moved, who they worked for, et cetera, and (for the women) when they married. Of course, it doesn't give what it doesn't have: detail for the years prior to the establishment of the Social Security Administration, itself.
But one can't have everything, I suppose. Ivey Lee Abernathy 1907 and (Lily) Virgie Ann Honeycutt 1907 were married on 20 May 1925 in Lenior, NC.6

It's a pity that the 1900 and 1910 census records aren't indexed on Ancestry yet, as are 1920 and 1930, however knowing where you're trying to find the people you're looking for is almost as good as an index, when the clues are as strong as they are here. Therefore:
Census, 1900, Burke Co, NC, Lovelady, ED 10, p. 180a&b, household 171-173: Abernathy, William P. age 49 b. Nov 1850, Maggie, age 42, b. Sep 1857.
Maggie had 9 children, of whom all were still alive at the time, albeit not all 'at home' with their parents.
The household in 1900 included the 5 youngest children: Charles (17), daughter May (15), 'Bennie' (13) whom I believe is your Benjamin, son Everet (8) and son Bertie (4). William P. Abernathy, wife Margaret, and the 4 elder children were found on the 1880 Census for Burke Co, NC, p. 263a, in the Lovelady community.
William is listed as a Carpenter. William is listed in the 1870 Burke County NC census as 'Willie P'. Census Roll M593_1126, Lovelady, p. 319, household #43-43, date 23 Jul, age 16. His parents are Logan Benjamin and Catharine (Jarrett) Abernathy.
Logan Benjamin Abernathy (1824-1909) was the next younger brother to Robert Laban Abernathy, Founder & President of Rutherford College, who also had a son named William, as you discovered, but my database shows William Ellis Abernathy married to a Miss Bertha Thomas Winn, and the 1900 census confirms that it was his cousin 'Willie P' who married Maggie. Estimated date of that marriage: 1871 or 1872. A letter to the relevant Burke County officers may well yield a certified copy of the license.
Robert Laban and Logan Benjamin are the two eldest children of Turner T. and Fannie (Whitener) Abernathy. I can trace that couple back thru the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census records but cannot identify two of the 10 children as yet. I cannot fully document at this time Turner's link to his presumed parents, Robert Abernathy and Sarah Nichols. Nor can I demonstrate with solid evidence that Robert's link with parents, either. I, personally, have Robert tentatively shown in my database as a son of David and Ann (Turner) Abernathy, but the evidence is not as conclusive as I would like. And there are those who claim Robert as a child of a different set of parents, pointing to some of the same documentation to do so. That far back, things can sometimes get murky, you see?

William, Sr. immigrated to America in 1772; John (William?) and sons John, Alexander, James & Joseph (half brothers of William, Sr.) immigrated to US in late 1770's.
The existence of William Sr.'s half brother/s is a story often related by almost every Speer family; however specific details were always lacking, until now. Half brothers were mentioned in William Speer, Jr's 1872 manuscript (Speer to SpeerF, 1872) (see also Whitmire, 1995c and QE for additional connection to Irish Speer Family). Today the families of William Speer, Sr. and his 2 half brothers John, & Alexander are well documented; however little is known about William, Sr.'s half brothers James & Joseph.
Several references give John (William?) Speer's name as William (for instance the LDS records), others give name as John. John is the most likely based on the fact that at least three of his children (Wm, Sr., John, & Alexander) had sons named John. In the case of Wm, Sr. & John Speer, their first born sons were named John (a Scottish & Irish tradition).
Alexander's son John's birth order is unknown.

"The Ferguson Family:
The Story of James Wiley Ferguson and Mary Elizabeth Jones" states: "But the boy, Robin, had now become a man and met and married Frances Love, who had come from her native land, Ireland, a few years after Robin had played the part of the Good Samaritan at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Th ere is a legend about Frances Love that will perhaps add interest to the story .
Frances Love was twelve years old when she left Ireland with her parents bound for America. On the way over, a terrible storm arose and their ship was driven southward to the Island of Jamaica. It was so hot there that the pitch with which the boat was put together began to melt. The wind soon changed and the light craft was driven north and landed, after a time, in South Carolina.
Robin Ferguson and his wife, Frances Love Ferguson, left South Carolina in the latter part of the 18th century and located in what is now known as Spring Creek in Madison County, North Carolina. There they remained for some years, and later moved into what is now Haywood County a few years prior to 1800, and located on Rush Fork creek. In the cemetery of the Crabtree Baptist church, Crabtree township, Haywood County, there stands a monument erected August 14, 1926 by the descendants of the first family of Fergusons that came to Haywood county. Upon the monument is this inscription:
Robert (or Robin) Ferguson, who was also settled here prior to 1800 was also of Scotch descent, having come from Glascard and settled first in (now) Madison County, NC and later on Rush Fork creek. He married Frances (Fannie) Love, a native of Ireland. An old family record gives the birth of Robin Ferguson as 1764, and his death as Febru ary 18, 1826, and Frances Love Ferguson's birth as 1768, and her death as October 16, 1858.
It also lists the children of Frances and Robin as : Robert, Andrew, Thomas, William, Samuel, Polly, Nellie. 1850 Census York Co. South Carolina Ferguson, Ann Page 262 York Dist. The inventory of the estate t ells much about the family; to have owned
land, slaves, pewterware, etc., de notes a man of comfortable financial
circumstances. Also, he had accounts an d notes due him meaning that he
had money to spare. He had books and signed his will in his own hand
meaning that he was literate and probably educated. [sarah_caswell-1745sc.ged]

William Speer (1652-?) was born in Aryshire, Scotland and immigrated to County Antrim, Northern Ireland where his son John Speer (1693-1764) and grandson John (William?) Speer (1723-1771) were born. Rev. William's five great-grandsons, William, Sr. (1747-1830), John (1748-1842), Alexander, Joseph, and James, all born in Ireland, immigrated to America in the late 1700's. William, Sr. was a half brother to brothers John, Alexander, Joseph, and James. Eventfully they all settled in the southern United States, primarily in Georgia and South Carolina where their families prospered and grew large.
Although nothing is known about the families of Joseph or James, the families of William, Sr., John and Alexander are well documented; some branches of all three families moved on to Alabama, Texas and Florida in the 1800's, where again large families were established. As of August 2000, my genealogy list covers 13 generations with over 5,500 individuals, both past and present, related to our earliest known Speer.
The story of great-grandson William Speer, Sr. (1747-1830) and his descendants is told in my 500-page William Speer book, published in 1998. Four subsequent newsletters also cover the descendants of William, Sr., as well as his half brothers John and Alexander.

576. Colonel Robert (John) Ferguson (Sr.) - was born about 1700 in Scotland.
He was born about 1700 in Scotland.
He died in 1794 in Lincolin Co, NC.
He died in Dec 1794 in Tryon County (now Lincoln County), North Carolina.
Robert FERGUSON Sr. was born about 1700 in Scotland.
He immigrated in 1750.
He died in Dec 1794 in Lincoln Co., North Carolina.
Notes from Harold Quinn:
"Col. Ferguson went to Northern Ireland in 1724. County Tyrone, Ulster Providence. He came to America in 1750. He was a grown man, head of a family when he came to this New World. He had with him his wife and at least two sons; Robert and Andrew, Sr., born in Scotland in 1724. They settled first near Ft. Pitt, now Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and remained there in Washington County for about ten years. But, before too long, partly because of Indian troubles in western Pennsylvania and partly on account of their close kindred already in the Carolina's, these Fergusons in 1762 packed up and moved to Camden District, South Carolina, (York County) where they lived for another ten years or more.
However, some time before the American Revolutionary War, they, family by family, moved to Lincoln County, North Carolina, and settled in the extreme western mountainous section of this County, after 1846 known as Gaston County. Robert, Jr moved in 1777 and bought land and settled on the headwaters of Long Creek and Little Long Creek. Col. Ferguson followed in 1779 and bought or secured by grants some 500 acres on the headwaters of the middle fork of Crowders Creek and settled at the foot of the south slope of Kings Mountain, "the nearest farm to the Kings Mountain Battlefield", which farm became known as the "Old Ferguson Home Place", and Andrew Sr. in 1783 bought 200 acres of adjoining that of the "Old Home Place" up on Crowders Creek.
Here these three Fergusons families lived the rest of their lives. Colonel Robert Ferguson was likely in his kilts when he came to America, and remained a typical Scots Highlander the rest of his days. When he died in 1794 in his will of that date he bequeathed to three of his sons his green coat, corduroy britches and velvet tucket and all his books and to each of his daughters her individual pony, saddle and bridle, bed and bed clothes, and spinning wheel.
To his wife Sarah (his second wife) the "Plantation" and arrange for the bringing up and schooling of his two youngest sons: Thomas (born 1780) and Andrew, Jr. half-brothers of Robert Jr. and Andrew, Sr." In notes from Todd Robinson's Ferguson tree submitted to the World Family Tree (WFT) Project from Family Tree Maker CD #5, Tree #1055: Robert Ferguson and his family came to America in 1750, and settled first near what is now Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
In 1762 they moved to Camden District, South Carolina. Before 1776 they moved again to Lincoln County, North Carolina, and in 1779 bought land at Crowders Creek, North Carolina.
He was married to Mary FITZPATRICK about 1721 in Scotland. Children were: Robert FERGUSON Jr, Andrew FERGUSON, William FERGUSON.

The data below is hard to document properly, due to the time-period; migration patterns that often came with a new name, when the individuals arrived in the American Colonies.
Of course, there are some documents, although family tree / genealogy researchers (serious hard-liners) do not like to be too gullible about the connections to royalty/heroes of the time period.
So, now that you have been properly warned that the following information is somewhat documented, somewhat 'iffy'; you can draw your own conclusion to the information given here.
Don't blame if there are errors, the data is from the 17th century! You can't call up the records office and say "hey! you got the facts wrong!"
Do your own research, and compare my notes -- if there are serious errors, that can be sorted out by a source that I have not found -- please do, write/email me.
I do appreciate any and all feedback, and input about my family tree.

2048. ROBERT ABERNATHY 1624 was born in 1624 in Banff, Scotland. elizabeth ferguson nss8660@yahoo.com 2003-08-25 12:13:58 [post 'em] Robert Abernethie/Abernathy/Ebernethell is on record as having arrived on these shores in 1652 as a single man, destined for 5 years of agricultural bondage, at the end of which time (and not before) he married Sara whose daugher is listed as Cubisha. Robert settled inland in the Virginia colony. There are many who attribute more than one son to Robert and Sara, but I do not believe there is any concrete evidence to support the existance of any except the Robert who (in 1704) was in possession of the same 100 acres of Virginia land purchased by the 1st Robert in 1667. May I please know the source of your claim that this William was a son of Robert and Sara (Cubisha?) He was born about 1624 near Perth, Scotland. He fought under Lord Leslie with t he Scots against Oliver Cromwell's roundheads at the Battle of Dunbar, and was taken prisoner. He was a minor officer and may have been distantly related to L ord Leslie. He was shipped with 1610 prisoners of war in 1652 to the Virginia c olonies, arrived at Jamestown, Va. where he served 4 years as an indentured ser vant . He learned the trade of growing, selling and trading tobacco. At the end of 4 years the Virginia authorities paid him a sum for his servitude, contrary to the wishes of the English authorities, and he used the money to send for hi s sweetheart in England, Sarah Cubishe or Cabbage, they were married in Charles City Co., about 1656, and Robert purchased some acreage on the James river, bu ilt a home and traded and grew tobacco. Re: Benjamin Abernethy -- Rutherford, William Abernethy, Maggie Griffon, NC Posted by: Elizabeth Ferguson (ID *****6954) Date: March 13, 2004 at 20:00:40 In Reply to: Benjamin Abernethy -- Rutherford, William Abernethy, Maggie Griffon, NC by Cathy A. Abernathy of 2166 It's a pity that the 1900 and 1910 census records aren't indexed on Ancestry yet, as are 1920 and 1930, however knowing where you're trying to find the people you're looking for is almost as good as an index, when the clues are as strong as they are here. Therefore: Census, 1900, Burke Co, NC, Lovelady, ED 10, p. William P.
